Preaching Philosophy
This preaching rubric was developed integrating three powerful communication approaches:
- The ME-WE-GOD-YOU-WE framework for natural sermon flow
- The WHY-HOW-WHAT model for purposeful clarity
- Adult learning principles focused on practice and retention
The purpose of this rubric is to create messages that don't merely inform but encourage life. By systematically addressing both understanding and application, this approach helps bridge the gap between ancient text and contemporary living.
Text Analysis
Before crafting a sermon, I analyze the biblical text through three lenses:
- WHY: Core purpose/principle of the text
- HOW: Methods/principles demonstrated
- WHAT: Specific actions called for
Hermeneutical Approach
I follow a structured hermeneutical process to ensure faithful interpretation:
- Observation – Examine context, genre, historical background, and key terms
- Interpretation – Derive meaning based on those observations
- Correlation – Compare with other Scripture to allow the Bible to interpret itself
- Verification – Reference historical sources (e.g., contemporary documents, church fathers, commentaries) for insight—not authority
- Application – Apply the original meaning to contemporary life
This analysis ensures that the message remains true to Scripture while providing clear direction for contemporary application.
Sermon Structure
My sermons follow a natural flow that connects with listeners and guides them toward transformation:
ME [IMPART]
- Personal story related to the text's theme
- Show genuine struggle or learning
- Connect your experience to the message
WE [IMPART & DEMONSTRATE]
- Universal human experience
- Current cultural challenges
- Shared struggles of the audience
- Transition to the need for biblical truth
GOD [IMPART & DEMONSTRATE]
Consider WHY placement:
- For narratives/teaching: Often WHY first
- For psalms/parables: Consider WHY after
Biblical Truth:
- WHY: State the core principle/purpose
- Historical Context: How original audience understood
- Contemporary Meaning: How it applies today
YOU [PRACTICE & FEEDBACK]
One Clear Practice Moment:
- Simple, doable action step
- Immediate application opportunity
- Take-home practice plan
WE [ONGOING COACHING]
- Vision of community impact
- Collective response
- Future picture when truth is lived out
- Call to shared action
